Wednesday night, during MLB Network’s MLB Tonight show, two clips were shown as teasers for upcoming episodes of a new series called My Most Memorable Game. It left me wanting more.
In the shows, MLB Hall of Famers (or in one case, future Hall of Famer) share with hosts Bob Costas and Tom Verducci their recollections of the most unforgettable game of their respective careers.
The series began two weeks ago with Cal Ripken Jr. discussing the night in which he played his 2,131st consecutive game, breaking Lou Gehrig‘s iron-man streak.
This Thursday night, January 30th, back-to-back episodes scheduled at 8 P.M. Central and 8:30 will feature Cardinals Hall of Famers Ozzie Smith and Bob Gibson.
The Wizard remembers his Game 5 of the 1985 National League Championship Series, on October 14, 1985. It began with a running back flip and ended with a walk-off home run against the Dodgers’ Tom Niedenfuer. Ozzie even recreates Jack Buck’s iconic call.
Gibson discusses his record-17 strikeout masterpiece against the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series, played on October 2, 1968.
Both classics were played at Busch Stadium II with the full game telecasts available in a boxed set entitled The St. Louis Cardinals Greatest Games of Busch Stadium, 1966-2005. I own the six-DVD set and highly recommend it.
Other greats scheduled to appear in the series include eight-time All-Star John Smoltz, who concluded his career with St. Louis, and Hall of Famers Johnny Bench and Tom Glavine.
